AN INFORMATION DESIGN MASTER GRADUATION PROJECT 2015
DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN
It is an 11-min film about how information shapes our minds and perception of reality. I investigated how different ways of storytelling contribute to our constantly changing perception of reality. The red thread is based on a personal story. It is edited with found footage, a collage of different ‘voices’ captivates the viewer to see how reality is constructed and reconstructed time after time.
Storytelling can create reality that engages audiences to feel an urgency, a sense of threat or justice, or simply the need to buy something. She feels an urge as well as a responsibility to narrate stories that can introduce different perspectives and let the audiences look through layers that comprise reality. Life is composed of stories and a real story is oxymoron.
‘This film is a skillfully edited depiction of an own reality with stolen images. An adventurous journey through our collective film memory that engages the viewer from the beginning until the last moment. The carefully chosen images create a distance at some times and bring up emotions at others, because they connect to the story almost magically or from a contrast with it. Consequently, the film attains a special layering that captivates the viewer until the end. The filmmaker found a way to make a personal story rise above the level of the personal perception. The film plays with the medium of film in a way the jury has never seen before. A unique graduation film.’ - Nederlands Film Festival (Juryrapport NFF Studentcompetitie)
"In Alice Wong 'Reconstructing Reality', the found-footage material complies organically into a compelling story. The editing concentrates pictures of disparate origins to inflate and contrast the personal narrative. The montage develops and reveals thereby elegantly mechanism of emotions and reality on motion-pictures. A little masterpiece!"- by Editing Judge Sandra Trostel (FLIMMERFEST Hamburg)
